The Secret of Batman's Butler Bruce Wayne und Dick Grayson steigen in die Bathöhle hinab, weil sie als Batman und Robin den Verbrecher Dan Marly fassen wollen. Als sie fort sind, packt Alfred Pennyworth seine Koffer und schreibt sein Kündigungsschreiben. Er will Bruce Wayne als Butler verlassen, weil er überzeugt ist, unwissentlich Batmans Geheimidentität verraten zu haben.
Es war vor langer Zeit, als Alfred für den Posten als Butler bei Bruce Wayne vorstellig geworden war und keine Ahnung gehabt hatte, dass Wayne Batman ist. Kurz nachdem Alfred zur Probe angestellt worden war, begegnete ihm in der Stadt ein Mann namens Noyes, der versuchte, Alfred über seinen neuen Dienstherrn auszuhorchen, und dafür sogar viel Geld anbot. Alfred blieb standhaft und erzählte nichts.
Wenig später offenbarten Wayne und Grayson vertrauensvoll Alfred ihre Geheimidentitäten und zeigten Alfred die Bathöhle. Alfred gelobte ewige Verschwiegenheit, begann aber darüber zu grübeln, ob er dem mysteriösen Noyes nicht vielleicht doch irgendetwas unbedacht Verräterisches über Wayne erzählt hatte.
In der folgenden Zeit erweist sich Alfred als loyaler Butler, der bei verschiedenen brenzligen Situationen Waynes geheime Identität als Batman zu schützen weiß. Als er eines Tages Noyes in der Bathöhle beobachtet, ist er sich schlagartig sicher, doch Batmans Geheimidentität vor Noyes irgendwie verraten zu haben. Ein letztes Mal, bevor er geht, will er noch einmal Batman schützen. Er verkleidet sich als Batman und will Noyes glauben machen, er sei der dunkle Ritter. Da nimmt Noyes die Maske ab: Es ist Bruce Wayne. Er hatte damals in der Maske von Noyes Alfreds Loyalität testen wollen und sich später dafür geschämt, weshalb er Alfred nie etwas davon erzählt hatte. Für die Verhaftung von Dan Marly hatte Batman die alte Noyes-Verkleidung verwendet, in der ihn Alfred schließlich gesehen hatte. Alfred ist froh, und Batman versichert ihm, dass er der beste Freund und Butler sei, den es je gab.
