It is estimated that over 13 million people have Sciatica. Sciatica is a condition that causes the sciatic nerve to be compressed or pinched. This nerve is the longest nerve in the body and runs almost the entire length of the body. It starts in the hips and buttocks and ends in the toes.

The easiest way to visualize nerve compression is to imagine your nerve being encased in a plastic tube. If the plastic tube gets compressed or pinched due to muscle spasms, spinal misalignment or injury - the signals from the brain through the nerve is stymied and results in a tremendous amount of pain and numbness. The severity of the pain often depends upon where the nerve is compressed and what is causing the condition. In nearly all cases of sciatica, cure and treatment as well a prevention methods are eagerly sought by the sufferer, because of its extremely excruciating and debilitating nature.

When one section of the Sciatica Cure is compressed, the pain normally radiates from the place of compression down an entire side of the body. Medical cures and over the counter medications may help to mask or reduce the pain, but most often do not entirely make the pain go away. However, there is no reason to fret. There are cures and treatments for sciatica that are proven to be optimistic and that can allow you to jump off the Ferris wheel of constant pain and suffering.

Three Sciatica Cure Treatment

Before deciding upon a cure, it is most important to understand what is causing the condition. It can begin due to something as simple as wearing bad shoes, or from a car accident or injury. It can also be due to exercising improperly or disc compression. For this reason, it is always a good idea to get an x-ray of the spine BEFORE taking medications or trying out a healing modality to make sure that there is no underlying condition.

Medical intervention. For those people with disc compression of the spine, medical intervention is often necessary. Seeing an orthopedic or 'back doctor' can help to assess the level of severity of compression and your treatment options. Most often, physicians will start out with ice and heat, as well as anti-inflammatory medications and some sort of therapy to help strengthen the muscles and rebuild the integrity of the spinal cord. It is important to understand that medical intervention DOES NOT have to always mean that you will need surgery at a later date. Be very specific with your doctor about what kinds of treatments you are interested in receiving.

Chiropractic Care and Acupuncture/Acupressure. Both of these healing entities deal with the alignment of the spinal column and the energy system of the human body. And both, are viable and non-invasive treatments and cures for sciatica. Most people find both immediate and long-term relief from having a chiropractic adjustment. It is important to understand that with chiropractic care, the muscles of the back and abdomen are responsible for holding the spinal column and adjustment in place. For this reason, it can take several adjustments before you get total relief. Acupuncture helps to unblock the channels of energy that are blocked with the compression of the nerve, and can also help to greatly reduce muscle spasms that may be causing the sciatica.

Exercise. One of the most important aspects of curing yourself from sciatica and preventing it from happening is to exercise regularly. There are specific stretches that are best for sciatica - but the bottom line is that total body health and wellness are important aspects of prevention and cure. Make sure that you wear proper shoes, and that you pay special attention to the technique you use when you exercise as not to put more pressure on the spinal column.

Safeguarding yourself against future sciatica flare-ups is essential to treating and curing the pain.
