What is Jailbreak?

Jailbreak or iOS Jailbreak is a process that allows Apple's devices operating on iOS such as iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Apple TV to obtain full usage of all its characteristics thus removing limitations imposed by Apple. With Jailbroken Apple product, user can use, down load and install programs, designs, and extensions which are not identified by Apple and are not on the iTunes shop and/or what we called "cracked" purposes.

Almost a year following the initial Jailbreak, an italian hacker named Zibri el Fontu found an important key to led him to be the first to Jailbreak the iPhone using his system called ZiPhone. Zibri readily distributed his codes and exploits leading the hacker team called iPhone Dev Team to develop the Jailbreaking software PwnageTool to Jailbreak iPhone 2G and 3G and the 1ST generation iPod effect. As early as 2009, Apple discharge the iOS 3.0 which remained unbroken before discharge of iPhone Dev Team's PwnageTool 3.0 and redsnow 0.7.2 after 3 months. The iOS 3.0 was rapidly followed up by iOS 3.1 which was then Jailbroken by iPhone Dev Team issuing a new edition of PwnageTool, all Apple products were Jailbroken except iPod Touch. However the Jailbreaking master George Hotz (a.k.a. Geohot) release his first device Blackra1n to "tether" Jailbreak all Apple devices. In March 2010 Wii Homebrew builder Comex produced a test of an "untethered" Jailbreak using his tool called Spirit. After the release of iPad 3G, Comex's Spirit was released Jailbreaking all Apple units running on 3.1-3.2, untethered. Not until early 2010, Jailbreaking becomes legal under the DMCA in Usa and many other places like Europe even though Apple state the guarantee to be voided by it. So far Jailbreaking is still developing as new Apple devices or firwares are introduced.

What is Tethered and Untethered Jailbreak?

Many individuals, specially the newbies in Jailbreaking don't know the difference between a tether Jailbreak and untethered Jailbreak. Well to allow it to be brief and distinct, Tethered Jailbreaking is a sort of Jailbreak that still depends upon the software used to Jailbreak a device every time it must reboot, meaning, everytime the connected unit is hard kicked, let down or went out of battery it can't boot on a jailbroken state until you join it to the computer and run the application you used to Jailbrake it, saying some of the procedure for Jailbreaking. While on the other hand, Untethered Jailbreak, all units under this Jailbreak may individually reboot itself anytime, preserving its Jailbroken state without requiring the application used to Jailbreak it.
