The size and duration from the settlements have not been well established. Chios island is thought to have been unoccupied from the Bronze Age. Later, chiefdoms developed. It is generally accepted that Homer has been a native of Chios Greece. Ionian most likely colonized this island, most likely emigrating from the mainland. Chios island was among the list of ancient members of the Ionian League, the largest exporter of fine wine. Beseiged by Rome, Chios Greek real estate was held next through the Persians. Christianized while being held from the Byzantine Empire, Chios island was next occupied because of the Saracens. In the early1200's, Venetians claimed Chios Greece, then passed it on to that Genoese. Chios island prospered underneath Genoese rule until the Turkish takeover inside 1566.
In 1821, Chios Island joined within the general Greek revolt, and for some reason was designated for especially severe punishment by the Turks. Most of the inhabitants was slaughtered, enslaved or managed in order to escape. Over 80% of the population seemed to be annihilated. That massacre of 1822 triggered massive outrage throughout much of Europe, and is still loved today.
Greeks retaliated, some time later, by blowing up a new Turkish ship in their particular Chios' home port. Even later, in 1881, a massive earthquake killed most of those living on the area. In 1912, Chios island became component to Greece, as it is nowadays.
